5-Day “Calm & Polite Walks” Challenge
Title Post (Post This First)
🐾 FREE 5-Day Calm & Polite Walks Challenge 🐾
Over the next 5 days, I’ll be sharing simple, practical tips to help you enjoy calmer, more enjoyable walks with your dog.
Each day will include one small action you can try straight away.
If you’d like to join in, comment “WALKS” below and I’ll tag you in each post.
Let’s make walks less stressful and more enjoyable for both ends of the lead.
Day 1 – Calm Starts Matter
🐾 Day 1 – The Calm Start Rule
Many pulling problems actually begin before you even leave the house.
If your dog is over-excited when the lead comes out, that excitement carries straight onto the pavement.
Today’s Action:
Before opening the door, wait for:
Four paws on the floor
No jumping
A brief moment of calm
You don’t need perfection. Just don’t move forward while excitement is escalating.
Small pause. Big difference.
Comment “DONE” once you’ve tried it.
Day 2 – Stop Rewarding Pulling
🐾 Day 2 – Movement Is the Reward
Dogs pull because it works.
If pulling gets them to a smell, a lamppost or another dog, they’re learning that tension on the lead pays off.
Today’s Action:
The moment the lead goes tight:
Stop walking
Stand still
Wait for slack
The walk only continues when the lead loosens.
Consistency is key.
Have you noticed when your dog pulls most?
Day 3 – Reward What You Like
🐾 Day 3 – Catch the Good Moments
Many owners focus on correcting pulling but forget to reward the moments their dog is walking nicely.
Today’s Action:
The moment your dog walks beside you with a loose lead:
Say “yes” (or your marker word)
Offer a small treat or praise
Reinforce the behaviour you want repeated.
Even 2–3 rewards per walk can make a difference.
Did you notice more good moments than you expected?
Day 4 – Manage the Environment
🐾 Day 4 – Set Your Dog Up to Succeed
Busy parks, school times and high-distraction routes can make training harder.
Today’s Action:
Choose a quieter route or time of day for one walk this week.
Lower distraction = better learning.
Confidence builds in calm environments first.
Where is your quietest local walking spot?
Day 5 – Put It Together
🐾 Day 5 – The Calm Walk Formula
Let’s recap:
✔ Calm start
✔ No forward movement on a tight lead
✔ Reward loose lead moments
✔ Choose manageable environments
Consistency beats intensity.
You don’t need hour-long perfect walks — just steady, repeatable habits.

A Note on The Dog House, Professionalism & Purpose
This space is written on one clear assumption:
you are a professional, not a casual pet lover with a lead and some spare time.
The Dog House exists because pet care, when done properly, is skilled work. It involves responsibility, judgement, boundaries, risk management, and decision-making — often under pressure and without applause.
Caring deeply does not mean operating loosely.
In fact, the more you care, the more structure you need.
You are allowed to:
• Treat your role as a profession, not a favour
• Expect clients to respect your time, policies, and expertise
• Put systems in place that protect your energy as well as your income
• Talk openly about boundaries, burnout, and business realities
• Acknowledge that loving animals does not mean tolerating poor behaviour from people
• Build a business that fits around your life, not one that consumes it
The Dog House is not about being harsh, cynical, or closed-off.
It is about being clear, grounded, and realistic.
Clarity reduces conflict.
Structure reduces stress.
Professionalism protects everyone — including the animals.
This space is here to support you in doing this work well, ethically, and sustainably, for the long term.
Because pet care businesses built on clarity and self-respect don’t just get by — they last.
