Intro Post (Post This First)
🐾 FREE 5-Day Reliable Recall Foundations Challenge 🐾
Does your dog come back every time you call?
Over the next 5 days, I’ll be sharing simple, practical steps to strengthen your dog’s recall — without shouting or repeating yourself.
Perfect for puppies and adult dogs who need a refresher.
Comment “RECALL” below if you’re joining in and I’ll tag you in each post.
Let’s build a recall you can trust.
Day 1 – Make Coming Back Worth It
🐾 Day 1 – Be More Interesting Than the Environment
Dogs don’t ignore recall to be stubborn. They ignore it because something else feels more rewarding.
Today’s Action:
Test your rewards.
When your dog comes to you in the house or garden, give:
A high-value treat (chicken, cheese etc.)
Or a short game
Save your best rewards for recall practice.
If coming back always pays well, they’ll choose you more often.
What reward did your dog respond to best?
Day 2 – Stop Repeating the Cue
🐾 Day 2 – Say It Once
“Buddy… Buddy… BUDDY!”
Repeating your recall cue teaches your dog they don’t need to respond the first time.
Today’s Action:
Practise indoors or in the garden.
Say your recall cue once
Wait
Encourage movement if needed
Reward generously when they reach you
One cue. One clear message.
Did you notice how often you normally repeat it?
Day 3 – Build the Habit of Turning Back
🐾 Day 3 – Reward the Check-In
Strong recall starts long before you call them.
Dogs who regularly check back during walks are easier to recall.
Today’s Action:
On your next walk (on lead if needed):
The moment your dog glances at you
Mark it (“yes”)
Reward
Reinforce connection before you need it.
How often did your dog check in today?
Day 4 – Practise on a Long Line
🐾 Day 4 – Add Safe Freedom
If recall isn’t reliable yet, avoid practising off-lead in open spaces.
Instead, use a long line in a safe area.
Today’s Action:
Let your dog explore
Call them once
Gently guide with the long line if needed
Reward big when they reach you
You’re building success, not testing them to fail.
Where did you practise today?
Day 5 – Never End the Fun
🐾 Day 5 – Recall Doesn’t Always Mean “Walk Over”
Many dogs learn that recall means lead on and fun finished.
That weakens the behaviour.
Today’s Action:
Call your dog back once during the walk.
Reward.
Then release them to continue exploring.
This teaches:
“Coming back doesn’t end the good stuff.”
Well done if you’ve taken part this week 👏

A Note on The Dog House, Professionalism & Purpose
This space is written on one clear assumption:
you are a professional, not a casual pet lover with a lead and some spare time.
The Dog House exists because pet care, when done properly, is skilled work. It involves responsibility, judgement, boundaries, risk management, and decision-making — often under pressure and without applause.
Caring deeply does not mean operating loosely.
In fact, the more you care, the more structure you need.
You are allowed to:
• Treat your role as a profession, not a favour
• Expect clients to respect your time, policies, and expertise
• Put systems in place that protect your energy as well as your income
• Talk openly about boundaries, burnout, and business realities
• Acknowledge that loving animals does not mean tolerating poor behaviour from people
• Build a business that fits around your life, not one that consumes it
The Dog House is not about being harsh, cynical, or closed-off.
It is about being clear, grounded, and realistic.
Clarity reduces conflict.
Structure reduces stress.
Professionalism protects everyone — including the animals.
This space is here to support you in doing this work well, ethically, and sustainably, for the long term.
Because pet care businesses built on clarity and self-respect don’t just get by — they last.
